How to Increase Your Odds When Changing Jobs

When you’ve been in a humdrum job and are seriously considering looking for another one, employment experts say not to be too hasty. Often times, you’ll jump into a job that you soon realize is the same, or worse, than your previous one. Here are some ways to improve on your odds of finding the right job that challenges and excites you.

  • Reconsider your circumstances.

Why are you frustrated with your current job? Perhaps you could change to a more challenging position and stay with your current company. Talk to your boss.

  • Find out who is hiring.

If you know someone who works for the company you want to interview with, try and learn if they are a good employee and if so, ask them for a personal reference.

  • Research the company.

When you get an interview, find out about that company. The right fit is very important so find out all you can about your potentially new employer. Talk to current employees.

  • Dig deeper.

If you get an offer, do your homework before accepting it. Go online and look for profit and loss statements, balance sheets, a business plan. Many times these are readily available if you just spend some time searching. If you can’t find them online, call the company and ask for them.

  • Wait before you jump.

Just because you get an offer doesn’t mean you will 100% be hired. So many things can happen at the last minute that can cause the company to retract its offer.

  • Get those blinders off.

Also make sure the position is challenging and fulfilling, especially if the salary is a lot higher. Looking through rose-colored glasses can land you in the same type of job you just left. This also applies if your current boss offers you more money to stay. Make sure he agrees to give you more challenging work to do and get it in writing.
